CUSTOMERS CONNECTING IN JAPAN BETWEEN INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS
A foreign citizen who must leave the airport while enroute to a third country, such as passengers in Japan at one airport and departing from a different airport (example Narita to Haneda or vice versa) may need a visa at that time.
The following cases require entry into Japan and may need a visa at that time.
- Transferring between Tokyo International Airport, Narita International Airport and (Haneda Airport).
- Travelers with a connecting flight out of Narita International Airport
- When arriving on an international flight and connecting to a Low cost carrier’s flight, passengers are required to complete arrival immigration and customs procedures.
- When passenger travel with two separate tickets, MIAT will no longer through-check passenger bags to the destinations on the secondary separate ticket.
MIAT will proceed through check –in for passengers connecting only with the following participating airlines (operating carriers) listed below.

If you are in doubt concerning this, please contact your airline of the Immigration office directly in advance.
Please Note:
- Aircraft can only operate between 6:00AM and 12:00AM at Narita Airport. Passengers cannot remain in the passenger terminals on the airside (before arrival procedures and after departure procedures) outside of those times. Passengers transiting overnight must complete arrival immigration and customs procedures. However, some passengers may need a visa at that time.
Transit Procedure:
- Check your flight time and boarding gate on your boarding pass or a flight information board.
- Follow the directions to the departure gate shown on the terminal displays. Please make sure you arrive at the boarding gate with plenty of time to spare.
- Be aware that sudden changes can occur, pay attention to announcements, and check flight information displays.
